Our Story

It all began in 1979...

PKF, originally known as Peter Kelly Flooring, began in 1979 when Sid Kelly and his wife Carolyn set out to build something of their own — a family business grounded in integrity, dedication, and quality workmanship. The name “Peter Kelly Flooring” came from Sid’s middle name, Peter, chosen because he believed it gave the company a more fitting identity. That decision would mark the beginning of a brand that quickly became recognised across Australia for its quality and reliability.

Sid’s experience at Armstrong Nylex Flooring gave him a strong foundation and the industry connections that helped launch the business. These early relationships proved invaluable, giving the fledgling company its first opportunities and allowing it to establish a foothold in a competitive industry. Peter Kelly Flooring soon earned a reputation for dependable workmanship and integrity — traits that became the hallmark of the business.

From day one, it was a true family venture. Sid and Carolyn worked side by side — Sid led operations, while Carolyn managed the books, administration and logistics. Carolyn’s sharp organisational skills and attention to detail were instrumental in running the growing company smoothly. Together, they built a partnership that set the tone for how PKF would operate for decades to come.

Operations began modestly, with the Kelly family’s garage in Glenorie, NSW, serving as the office and a small shed in Granville belonging to Sid's father as their first warehouse. Sid & Carolyn's young son, Peter, was already deeply involved — helping to load and unload rolls of flooring and learning the trade firsthand. Those early years were filled with long hours and steady progress, driven by a work ethic that became central to PKF’s identity.

The company’s first major milestone came in the late 1980s with the St George Hospital redevelopment. It was a pivotal project that marked PKF’s entry into large-scale healthcare work — a sector that would remain one of its strongest to this day. Peter personally delivered vinyl rolls in the back of a ute, working side by side with installers to ensure deadlines were met and quality never compromised. That hands-on, practical approach became a defining part of the company’s culture.

As PKF grew, new challenges followed. Managing labour, warehousing, and logistics required constant attention, and the company often found itself outgrowing its facilities. But its reputation for reliability and quality helped attract skilled tradespeople and long-term partners, fuelling steady growth throughout the 1990s.

A major turning point came in 1995, when Sid retired from day-to-day operations and Peter stepped into a leadership role. Under his direction, PKF expanded its footprint into Queensland, further extending its capacity to service clients nationwide. This period also saw PKF undertake multiple large-scale hospital projects simultaneously — including Adelaide, Wagga, Bega, Blacktown, and Sunshine Coast Hospitals — managing over 290 subcontractors simultaneously at its peak. These landmark projects cemented PKF’s standing as one of Australia’s most capable and trusted commercial flooring contractors.

The move to a larger facility in Castle Hill represented another key milestone. The new premises provided the infrastructure and space required to support larger operations, improve logistics, and streamline processes. It marked the start of a new chapter — blending operational scale with the hands-on, personal approach that has always defined PKF’s way of doing business.

Today, PKF remains proudly family-owned, guided by the same values Sid and Carolyn built the company on: integrity, workmanship, and respect. The next generation continues to uphold those principles while embracing modern technology, sustainability, and industry innovation.

Over more than four decades, PKF has delivered projects of every scale — from boutique fit-outs to complex multi-stage developments. Its adaptability and deep industry knowledge have enabled the company to meet the demands of healthcare, education, transport, hospitality, and commercial sectors across Australia.

Looking ahead, PKF remains focused on the future while honouring its past. The company’s long-term vision includes celebrating its 100-year milestone — not as a measure of longevity alone, but as a reflection of consistent quality, genuine relationships, and a dedication to community.

The story of PKF is one of humble beginnings, perseverance, and a family legacy that continues to evolve. More than four decades later, what began in a suburban garage now helps shape some of Australia’s most significant developments — and the values that started it all still guide every project we deliver.

Peter Kelly — Leadership Built on Legacy

Peter Kelly, the force behind PKF, has been integral to the company’s journey since its earliest days. Following in the footsteps of his father, Sid, Peter has taken the helm and steered PKF with a blend of tradition, innovation, and family-driven purpose. His path to leadership was not a straight line, but a natural progression shaped by hands-on experience, hard work, and deep respect for the values his parents instilled.

Reflecting on his early life, Peter shares,
“I played a lot of footy, both rugby league and rugby union. During my school years, I did part-time jobs, including removalist work and helping my dad with labouring tasks like take-ups and moving vinyl. Working in the business was always a part of my life.”

After finishing school in 1986, Peter briefly pursued a career in plumbing.
“I did plumbing for a bit, but I didn't really enjoy it. While waiting for another plumbing job, I started helping Dad out because he needed a hand,” Peter recalls.

This period marked a pivotal moment in his career. Peter’s dedication and work ethic quickly became evident when his father’s off sider injured his back, and Peter stepped in to run labour and handle quotes.

“I never thought I'd be in the business,” Peter admits. “But as time went on, it became a natural progression. Dad realized that I was the right fit. So, I took on more responsibility, and off it went.”

Peter fondly remembers working closely with his father until the day he passed away.
“We worked well together until the day he died. He still had his finger on the pulse until the very end,” he says.

Those years forged Peter’s philosophy on leadership and business. He attributes his discipline and resilience to his upbringing.
“My upbringing was all about working with Dad. We lived on five acres and always had chores. The work ethic came from Dad – we were always doing something,” he says.

For Peter, success has never been about titles — it’s about family, growth, and carrying forward a standard of excellence.
“My kids and the business are my biggest achievements,” he proudly states.

He also acknowledges his father as his greatest influence and mentor.
“Dad was my biggest influence. He passed away in 2022, but his impact on my life and the business remains.”

Peter’s leadership style mirrors the foundation laid by Sid and Carolyn — one of loyalty, teamwork, and respect. The relationships built with his staff and partners are a source of great pride.
“I enjoy the growth of the staff and the direction the company is going. I love being involved in that and watching it evolve,” he explains.

However, Peter’s honesty and humility remain constant.
“Poorly,” he admits when asked about balancing work and personal life. “But in recent years, I've gotten better at it.”

He shares simple but powerful advice for young professionals finding their way.
“Find your balance, be disciplined inside and outside of work, and be respectful to everyone, including yourself,” he advises.

Looking ahead, Peter’s goals are grounded in family and legacy.
“I hope my kids have successful lives and maybe one day I'll be a grandparent,” he says. “I want to ensure that the next generation doesn't make the same mistakes I did. I want them to have a better balance and not let work affect their personal lives.”

Peter Kelly’s journey is a testament to his dedication, resilience, and commitment to the values that have shaped PKF.
His leadership continues to drive the company forward, ensuring that PKF remains a name synonymous with excellence in the flooring industry — and that the Kelly family legacy of integrity and craftsmanship endures for generations to come.
