Project Overview

The G08 Molecular Bioscience Building, located on the University of Sydney’s Camperdown campus, is a prominent heritage-listed facility originally constructed in the early 1970s. Known for its Brutalist architectural design and its role in advancing biochemistry and microbiology research, the building is undergoing a major refurbishment to meet modern research and laboratory standards.

The refurbishment project, led by Lendlease, involves extensive upgrades across approximately 7,000 square metres of space. Once complete, the G08 building will house cutting-edge Physical Containment Level 2 (PC2) wet laboratories, technical write-up areas, academic offices, and collaborative learning environments.

PKF was engaged to deliver flooring installations throughout the upgraded G08 facility. Given the specialist nature of the building, flooring materials and installation methods had to meet stringent hygiene, chemical resistance, and durability requirements suitable for scientific research environments.

Scope of Work

  • Supply and installation of flooring systems across ~7,000 sqm
  • PC2 lab-grade flooring including chemical-resistant finishes
  • Technical zones and cleanroom-compatible finishes
  • Durable and easy-to-maintain surfaces for shared learning areas, circulation spaces, and back-of-house facilities

Working in a Heritage-Listed Building

Preserving the architectural integrity of the original G08 structure while updating it for modern use required close collaboration with builders, architects, and project managers. PKF ensured that flooring interfaces with walls, services, and thresholds were handled with precision and minimal disruption to original design elements.

Laboratory Compliance

Wet labs require flooring systems that can withstand chemical exposure, maintain airtight seals, and remain slip-resistant under strict health and safety guidelines. PKF’s team applied specialist installation techniques and lab-compliant adhesives to meet PC2 standards.

Live Campus Environment

With refurbishment occurring during academic operation periods, all works had to be scheduled to avoid disruptions to university activities. PKF maintained flexible shifts, clear access coordination, and noise minimisation strategies.

Conclusion

The refurbished G08 building will provide world-class laboratory and teaching spaces that support interdisciplinary research and scientific discovery. PKF’s high-performance flooring systems will contribute to a clean, safe, and functional environment fit for future-focused academic work.

PKF is proud to be playing a key role in the transformation of the G08 Molecular Bioscience Building. Our expertise in large-scale, high-compliance flooring projects ensures the University of Sydney will benefit from a robust, future-proof flooring solution tailored for modern science.
